JAVANESE SCRIPT NOW USABLE AS FONT CHARACTER IN COMPUTER PROGRAMS

Surabaya, Indonesia, Nov 2 (ANTARA) - The ancient Javanese script known as Hanacaraka has been officially recognized by UNICODE, a UN-coordinated institution, and can thus be used as a font character in any standard computer program, a Javanese source said.

Hanacaraka script can now be used as a font character in computer programs like Latin, Chinese, Arabic and Japanese scripts, Aryo Tumoro, editor of Javanese-language magazine "Penyeber Semangat" said here Monday.

"UNICODE has appoved Javanese script to be put into computer program all over the world," he said.

UNICODE is an institution under the coordination of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) tasked with defining lettercode standards for world computer programs.

He said the application for the recognition of Javanese script was made to UNESCO by Ki Demang Sokowaten from Yogyakarta last September 9, 2007. UNESCO then recognized Javanese script as one of the world's languages just as it acknowledged Indonesian Batik last October 2, 2009.

"Now people can ask computer programmers to put Javanese script into computer font programs," said Aryo adding that Ki Demang Sokowaten had also been operating a website with the address code www.ki-demang.com since January 6, 2006, containing features on Javanese culture.

Ki Demang, Aryo added, also put in the website several short stories written in the Javanese language and features about ways to define a person's character according to the Javanese calendar (Weton).

"The website is part of our efforts to preserve the Javanese language which is being spoken by a declining number of people in Indonesia," said Aryo.***
