Korea's ex-unification minister receives Chirac award
By Kim Hyun
SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's former unification minister will be
honored this week by a non-governmental foundation founded by former French
President Jacques Chirac for his efforts to promote peace on the Korean
Peninsula.
The Chirac Foundation said on its Website that Park Jae-kyu will receive the
Jacques Chirac Prize for Conflict Prevention in a ceremony in Paris on Friday.
Park was South Korea's unification minister from 1999 to 2001 under late
President Kim Dae-jung and played a major role in arranging the historic first
inter-Korean summit between the president and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il in
2000. Park has also taught North Korean studies in Seoul and is currently the
president of Kyungnam University.
The Chirac foundation was established last year to promote sustainable
development and cultural diversity.
