Samsung Electronics to recall Zipel fridges sold abroad
By Lee Youkyung
SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung
Electronics Co. said Tuesday that it would extend its recall service to over
200,000 refrigerators sold overseas to ensure safety, following a similar
domestic recall a week ago.
Samsung announced last week that it would offer home visits and repair services
to 210,000 side-by-side Zipel refrigerators manufactured between March, 2005 and
June, 2006, citing an insulation problem that could lead to safety issues.
Samsung said that the overseas recall applies to some 200,000 Zipel units
produced around the same period, most of which were shipped to Europe and Africa.
None were sold in North America, it added.
The move came after an accident in October when a Samsung refrigerator exploded
in a household in Yongin, south of Seoul, following an explosion of another
Samsung fridge in Pretoria, South Africa, three months earlier.
