PADANG SUFFERS RP7 TRILLION IN LOSSES IN SEPT 30 QUAKE
Padang, W Sumatra, Indonesia, Nov 3 (ANTARA) - The Padang city administration said it has suffered a loss of more than Rp7 trillion in the September 30, 2009 earthquake.
The loss included damage to clean water pipelines built under the city's roads, Padang Mayor Fauzi Bahar said here on Tuesday.
To repair the damaged water pipelines would cost the city government very much, he said.
"If the roads are to be dug this will cost very much. That's why we will build new pipelines in other places. We need to speed up the project to meet city dwellers' post-quake need for clean water," he said.
He said the city administration continued to improve school buildings, hospitals, markets and other infrastructure facilities damaged in the magnitude 7.9 quake.
"We hope the central government through Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono will soon help speed up the repair on the damaged infrastructure facilities," he said.
Padang is one of the areas in West Sumatra that bore the brunt of the massive quake.
Data from the city's main command post show a total of 383 people were killed, 431 seriously and 771 lightly injured .
The quake caused major damage to 1,606 school buildings, moderate damage to 1,038 school buildings and light damage to 903 school buildings, inflicting a total loss of more than Rp262.62 billion.
A total of 15 health facilities were seriously damaged, 17 moderately and 53 others lightly.
The quake also caused major damage to 33,597 houses, moderate damage to 35,816 houses and light damage to 37,615 houses at a total loss of more than Rp5.5 trillion. ***
