CLIMATE CHANGE ALREADY HARMING FARMERS : CSF

Jakarta, Nov 3 (ANTARA) - Coordinator of the Civil Society Forum (CSF) for Climate Justice, Giorgio Budi, said climate change has harmed most Indonesian farmers.

"Many Indonesian farmers are unable to set the exact time for planting new seedlings because their predictions of the rainy season often fail," Giorgio said here on Tuesday.

Giorgio also said rainy seasons lasted for relatively shorter times in recent years whereas they were one of the factors affecting farmers considerations in choosing seedlings.

The changes in the pattern of season shifts, the length of time and the amount of rainfall had also affected fishermen, the life of animals and vegetation, Giorgio added.

"Unexpected climate conditions make it difficult for fishermen to decide the perfect time to sail. Fishermen used to take advantage of Eastern winds which blow in the morning to sail and Western winds in the afternoon to return home. However, due to climate change, Western winds now might occur during the day and force fishermen to return ashore before they can get enough fish to sell, "he said.

According to Giorgio, these unfortunate conditions became known at a seminar themed "Struggle for Safety in the Central Climate Change" which was held in Jakarta, last November 2, 2009.

The event brought together civil society groups and communities directly affected by the impact of climate change with the government as policy makers.

The seminar also had as participants related agencies such as the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Health, members of the House of Representatives and National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).

"The seminar aimed to prioritize climate justice in the management of natural resources and development, we hope that these efforts can strengthen the value of public bargaining," he said.

Giorgio added, in managing the impact of climate change, people should consider the pillars known as HELP - Human security, Ecological debt, Land right and Pattern of Production Consumption.

"The public`s involvement is needed in order to maintain the four pillars, particularly people from groups vulnerable to various levels of decision making," he said. ***3***
