TEAM STUDYING POLICE CHIEF'S EXPLANATIONS

Jakarta, Nov 4 (ANTARA) - The team tasked with verifying the police's charges against suspended antigraft body officials Bibit Samad Ryanto and Chandra M Hamzah is now still studying the police's explanations so as to get a clear perspective of the case.

The chief of the team, Adnan Buyung Nasution, said in a press conference on Wednesday evening that there had been some explanations clarifying why the charges were laid against Bibit and Chandra.

He said there was information that businessman Anggoro Widjoyo, a suspect in corruption in the procurement of an integrated radio communication system by the forestry ministry, had given some money to antigraft (KPK) officials.

"Antasari (former KPK chief) is to be asked to crosscheck it as it was all recorded and then he made a testimony. It was all found in his laptop. The police had confiscated the laptop and could therefore get his testimony. From there, the case developed. Chandra's case is an exclusive case," he said.

In the explanations by the National Police Chief to the team the name of former forestry minister MS Kaban was also mentioned, he said, adding the police however did not develop the case because they thought it was the authority of the KPK.

One of the team members, Amir Syamsudin, said all information the team had collected would not automatically be accepted as facts but it would be crosschecked with all parties.

"This is part of the initial clarifications but we will not automatically believe them. We still have yet to check the clarifications' veracity before an expose on Saturday. We will conduct crosschecks with parties concerned in the next few days," he said.

Another member, Anies Baswedan, concurred and, asked all parties to be patient because not all parties that needed to be heard had been questioned in the initial round of the team's work.

"It is just the beginning. There will be a schedule for hearings with a number of individuals. Individual summons will be served. Today's hearings were still on macro aspects but starting tomorrow we will go into the details," he said.

The team met with representatives from the public at 10am and then with the national police chief at 2pm.

The team will meet and ask for information from several parties on Thursday. Denny Indrayana, another team member, said the team would meet with KPK leaders at 10am and with Chandra and Bibit at 1pm and later at 4pm with Anggodo Widjojo and Susno Duadji at 7pm.***1***
