SPEAKER ASKS POLICE CHIEF, AG TO ACT ON TAPPED CONVERSATIONS

Jakarta, Nov 4 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Marzuki Alie has asked the National Police Chief and the Attorney General to take follow up actions on the phone conversation recordings heard at the Constitutional Court on Tuesday.

"The recording of wiretapped conversations was heard to prove that there were attempts to criminalize antigraft body (KPK) leaders," he told newsmen at the parliament building here on Wednesday.

He said, if any criminal act proved to have been committed by the police officers or prosecutors who took part or were mentioned in the phone conversations, the police chief and attorney general should not hesitate to act, if public confidence in the law enforcement agencies in the country was to be restored.

"Police officers or prosecutors who are suspected of being involved in crimes must be legally processed and if they are proven guilty they must be dealt with resolutely or be fired, if necessary," he said.

He said the recording could be used as an input for the national police and attorney general office leaderships to follow up the KPK case.

Marzuki meanwhile also asked the people to understand that the law enforcement officials involved in the case did not represent their respective institution.

The acts of individuals must not be automatically understood as reflecting their institutions, he said. "There are still a lot of other officials with high integrity," he said.

Citing another example, he said when one or two members of the House of Representatives (DPR) were arrested in connection with a corruption case, it did not mean that the DPR was bad because there were still many other DPR members who were honest and working well.

Marzuki said he believed that by strongly acting against those involved in crimes, the reputation of law enforcement institutions in the country would be saved.

"I ask the police leadership to act firmly in line with the existing procedures and regulations," he said.

The recording heard at the Constitutional Court contained wiretapped converstations between businessman Anggodo Widjojo and a number of officials regarding efforts to engineer a bribery case against KPK deputy chiefs Bibit Samat Rianto and Chandra M Hamzah.

Among the officials mentioned in the recording were the head of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department, Commissioner General Susno Duaji, Vice Attorney General Abdul Hakim Ritonga and former junior attorney general for intelligence Wisnu Subroto.***1***
