HOUSE ASKS ANTI-GRAFT BODY NEVER TO MISUSE ITS POWERS
Jakarta, Nov 4 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission III on legal affairs has asked the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to guarantee it will never misuse its formidable powers, the commission's chairman said.
Benny K Herman, said that the House has asked the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) not to abuse its authorities.
"We ask the KPK to give us a guarantee that its internal management will never lead to abuse of its powers , including information obtained from wiretaps. The information may not be commercialized," Benny K Herman, the House Commission III's chairman, said in a hearing with the KPK here on Wednesday.
He said the KPK was given extraordinary powers such as the power tap people's phones and arrest corruption suspects. But these powers must not abused by the KPK, he said.
He noted that KPK had the right to bug a conversation of any person suspected of involvement in a corruption case but stressed the tapped conversations could not be revealed to anybody.
Asked whether there was a perception that the KPK had indeed misused any of its powers, Benny said there was a possibility it had.
"But we hope all legal problems handled by the KPK will be explained in the most transparent way possible so that the public will not harbor any suspicion," he said.
In connection with businessman Anggodo's case, Commission III was of the view that it showed the existence of brokerage networks in Indonesia's legal system, and this was very dangerous, Benny said.
Referring to the release of Bibit Samad Riyanto and Chandra Chamzah, the suspended KPK deputies who were detained earlier by police, Benny said the matter involved a normative right. If later, they were proven not to be guilty, they should be fully reinstated to their positions in KPK. "It is a legal consequence," he added.
He also referred to the law enforcement agency officials whose names were mentioned in wiretapped conversations which allegedly indicated a plot to frame the KPK.
On this matter, Commission III asked the Fact-Finding Team to clarify the matter by questioning the parties involved in the tapped conversations.***1***
