RESCUERS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY PLANE CRASH VICTIMS

Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia, Nov 5 (ANTARA) - Rescue workers had difficulty identifying the bodies of the four-man crew of a police-owned Sky Truck aircraft which crashed near Mount Dorman, Papua, on Monday (Nov 2) as the bodies were completely charred and disfigured.

The dead of the SAR (Search and Rescue) team that had recovered the bodies, Suyatno, said here Thursday he had not yet seen the condition of the bodies. But based on the SAR team reports at the scene, via satellite phone, the identities of the bodies were hard to establish immediately.

One corpse was evacuated immediately to Jayapura using a Puma helicopter belonging to the Air Force at around 13:00 Eastern Indonesia Standard Time (WIT). Meanwhile, the three other bodies were transported in body bags to the Dabra post.

"Seeing from photos taken in the field, it is possible that the aircraft crashed into a cliff and immediately caught fire. But it cannot be concluded at this time if someone had tried to jump out of the aircraft or not," he said.

Suyatno said further there was no immediate report about the the victims' identities but his side would continue to search for the victims.

The aircraft with a crew of four and carrying eight drums of gasoline and diesel oil lost contact with Sentani airport's traffic control tower on its way from Jayapura to Mulia in Puncak Jaya district on Monday, SAR team leader Suyatno said here Thursday.

The ill-fated plane was piloted by Adjunct Commissioner Junus who was assisted by co-pilot Adjunct Commissioner Benedictus and two technicians, namely First Brigadier Kuswanto and First Brigadier Syaiful.

Jayapura Police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Matheus Fakhiri said on Monday he had received a report that the aircraft took off from Sentani airport at 11.38 am Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT) and was scheduled to arrive in Mulia, capital of Puncak Jaya district, at 1.30 pm (WIT). ***
