PRESIDENT ASKS FOR CHANGE IN PARADIGM IN HEALTH SECTOR
Jakarta, Nov 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for a change in the paradigm of public health care from medication to prevention.
"We want to change the paradigm from being free of medication to being free and healthy. So the role of community healthcare centers, integrated health service center, immunication and family planning programs and eradication of diseases will be increased. So we do not wait until someone falls ill and then is given medication but will improve public health," the head of state said after a cabinet meeting at his office here on Thursday.
Despite the change he said service for those who were sick would still be continued including for those who were poor.
"Certain areas which are vulnarable to diseases such as dengue fever, tuberculosis and HIV would remain to be given attention. Being healthy is free and therefore we will encourage the poor to remain healthy," he said.
With regard to education the head of state said the government would formulate the link and match mechanism in the next 100 days so that leavers of formal education institutes were ready to work and did not face difficulties finding jobs.
"The target in the first 100 days in office is preventing a mismatch. Many graduates from universities in the regions do not match with the job market. This must not happen. We will formulate the mechanism in the next 100 days," he said.
Regarding disaster management the President called for the establishment of a kind of forces to be ready anytime to be sent to affected regions.
The team would consist of medical personnel, red cross workers, communications experts, military and police members. The team will be supported with planes such as Hercules and other types for use in emergency response efforts.
"I wish in the next 100 days it is not only the standard procedures or personnel which are ready but the system is also ready," he said.***
