The proposal is expected to be come up soon before
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who also holds charge of the
Culture Ministry.
If Singh and Cabinet approve the proposal, the
articles will be declared as antiquities under the
Antiquities and Art Treasures Act 1972. Under the Act, an
article, object or thing which has been in existence for less
than 100 years can be declared as antiquity.
The move to declare such articles as antiquities has
been necessitated as at present there is no rule or law under
which the government can ask people, who possess such
articles, to register.
This will also help the government create a database of
the articles owned by Gandhi. Thousands of items owned by
Gandhi are now in possession of several people across the
world.
"Once an item is declared an antiquity, people will have
to register those. Then, whenever they sell the article or do
anything with that they have to inform the government. This
way we can prevent smuggling of the articles and also create a
database," a senior official said.
He said antiquities cannot be auctioned or sold without
the knowledge of the government. PTI ETB AKK
