HOUSE TO HEAR AG, POLICE CHIEF, KPK LEADERS TOGETHER
Jakarta, Nov 6 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission III on legal affairs will hold a joint hearing with the national police chief, the attorney general and leaders of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in order to build harmonious relations among them.
The decision to hold a joint meeting with Commission III and the three law enforcing institutions was made in a Commission III hearing with National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri on Thursay night. It discussed an alleged attempt to frame KPK leaders and undermine the anti-graft body.
Presided over by House Commission III chairman Benny K Harman, the hearing lasted seven hours from 7 pm on Thursday until 2.45 am Friday.
The agreement to bring the three institutions to meet together was reached after Commission III members made various statements during Thursday's hearing, including a statement which referred to the existence of legal case 'markus' (brokers).
Initially, the meeting will firmly ask the police to crack down on 'markus' and included the term in the final conclusion of the metting but the term 'markus'. However, the term was finally eliminated from conclusion.
The elimination of the term was based on the consideration that 'markus' practices happened not only with the police institution but also in the prosecutors' office, even within the KPK itself.
The House Commission III held a hearing with the police chief on Thursday in connection with the replay of wiretapped conversations in a session of the Constitutional Court (MK) on Tuesday.
The bugged conversations indicated the existence of an alleged plot to frame suspended KPK deputies Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra Chamzah and undermine the anti-graft body.
Police had named Chandra M Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto suspects in September 2009. They were later detained on bribery, abuse of authority and extortion charges.***
