RI NAVY FROGMEN EXERCISING WITH US NAVY SEALS

Bandarlampung, Nov 9 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy's Frogmen's Force (Paska TNI-AL) on Monday (Nov 9) began a joint exercise with US Navy Seals in Lampung province, a naval spokesman said.

Codenamed "Flash Iron 10-01 JCET", the joint exercise will last 24 days or end on December 2, 2009, Col Weddy W, commander of the Lampung naval base, said at Telukratai, a seaside spot in the Padangcermin area of Pesawaran district, Lampung province, on Monday.

"The purpose of this joint exercise is to sharpen and increase the professional skills of the Indonesian Navy's Frogmen's Force and the US Navy Seals," Col Weddy said in kicking off the exercise on behalf of the commander of the Indonesian Navy's Western Fleet Command.

In the exercise, the participants' capabilities would be tested individually as well as collectively and they would have an opportunity to increase their mastery of standard operation procedures , especially on field maneuvers, he said.

Col Andi Kriswanto, commander of the Indonesian Navy's Eastern Fleet Command's Frogmen's Force, said, joint exercises were previously often held in the eastern parts of Indonesia. But now the idea was to try staging an exercise in Lampung in the western part of Indonesia where conditions were considered suitable for exercises as the region had mountainous terrains, beaches and an international seaport.

During the 24-day exercise, the troops would hone their skills in target shooting , blowing up objects, anti-terrorist operations at Panjang Port and para jumping at Raden Inten airport.

The officer in command of the US Navy Seals, Col Robinson, said the unit was represented by 15 men in the joint exercise. He said it was hoped the exercise would be a step toward increased cooperation between the two navies.

Robinson who is normally stationed at the US embassy in Jakarta also said the embassy would next December repair school buildings and community health centers in Lampung in cooperation with the provincial government.
