BIMA QUAKE INJURES 88, KILLS ONE

Bogor, Nov 9 (ANTARA) - A magnitude 6.7 earthquake that rattled Bima town, West Nusa Tenggara province, before dawn on Monday has injured 88 people by 02.30 p.m. on that day.

Six of the injured sustained bone fractures, the head of the health ministry's crisis control center, Dr Rustam S Pakaya, said in a short message service (SMS) text sent to ANTARA.

He said the quake also killed one person, identified as Siti Aisyah. The 70-year-old woman died after receiving intensive medical treatment for seven hours at a local general hospital.

The head of West Nusa Tenggara provincial natural disaster mitigation coordination board, Supardi Sukandar, said earlier in the day only one person was killed in the quake.

Rustam said two health facilities were seriously damaged and two others lightly.

The quake which was centered 28 km southwest of Bima also caused damage to 282 house buildings.

"Up till now no resident has taken refuge. And a medical team of the Bima health service is still in the field. The health ministry itself has dispatched its staff to join a Natural Disaster Mitigation Board (BNPB) team," he said.

Quoting the results of a coordination meeting among relevant officials on Monday, Supardi said the quake that hit three subdistricts in Bima district and two subdistricts in Bima municipality had left tens of people seriously and lightly injured.

But most of the injured were allowed to go home on that day after receiving medical treatment at local hospitals and health service posts, he said. ***3***
