LD BYPOLL 3
In Kalchini constituency in Jalpaiguri district, the
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM)-supported Independent Wilson
Champamari wrested the seat from Revolutionary Socialist Party
(RSP), defeating Binoy Bhushan Karket by over 6,000 votes.
CPI-M was trailing behind Trinamool candidate in the
prestigious Belgachia East seat by over 10,000 votes after the
fourth round of counting.
The seat had fallen vacant following the death of CPI(M)
stalwart and former transport minister Subash Chakraborty, who
had won from the seat for seven consecutive terms. The CPI(M)
had fielded his widow Ramala Chakraborty from the seat.
In Uttar Pradesh, Independent candidates are leading in
Kolasala, held by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Jhansi,
represented by Congress party.
Though Congress was ahead in Lucknow (West), a seat held
by BJP, it was trailing in both Jhansi and Padrauna seats it
won in 2007.
Both Jhansi and Padrauna seats fell vacant after elected
representatives Pradeep Jain Aditya and RPN Singh won the Lok
Sabha polls.
In Rajasthan, BJP candidate Ramesh Meena wrested Todabheem
Assembly seat from an Independent. Meena defeated nearest
Congress rival Shiv Dayal by 8,277 votes.
In the other bypoll in the state, Congress retained
Salumber constituency in Udaipur district when its candidate
Basanti Devi defeated Amritlal Meena of BJP by 3,098 votes.
