RI, AUSTRALIAN SAR TEAMS STAGE JOINT EXERCISE
Kupang, Indonesia, Nov 10 (ANTARA) - SAR (serach and rescue) teams from Indonesia and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) conducted a four-day joint exercise in the Timor Sea on November 9-12, 2009.
The joint exercise was intended to step up and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
"The joint exercise between Indonesian and Australian SAR teams was dubbed 'Sarex Ausindo 2009' and took place in Kupang," local SAR spokesman Hery Sasongko said at the exercise's opening ceremony here on Tuesday.
He said Sarex Ausindo was a coordination media for the vigilance in save and rescue operations on the borders between Indonesia and Australia.
Sasongko said the objective of the joint exercise was to step up coordination between Kupang's SAR office and Australia in a joint operation management at Indonesian-Australian border by implementing the procedures which had been agreed on by the two countries.
"Parallel maneuvers and control functions are the things being tried out in the joint exercise," Sasongko said.
Meanwhile, National SAR Team (Basarnas) joint exercise and operation director Air Commodore Teddy Sutedjo said the SAR exercise program in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) was one of the priorities to improve bilateral cooperation with Australia.
He said Basarnas had arranged the joint SAR exercise to maintain and to improve the capability of the teams in the real operation any time whenever needed in a real operation.
"The area around Kupang is prone to transportation accident and natural disaster, and therefore we have to be ready and remain on guard anytime in order to make preventive measures," he said. ***
