Three Liberian men arrested in fake dollar scam

SEOUL, Nov. 10 (Yonhap) -- Three Liberian men have been arrested in Seoul for
attempting to sell worthless paper disguised as U.S. dollar and British pound
bills in an unorthodox scam, police said Tuesday.

The trio told a Seoul businessman that they had smuggled US$5 million along with
5 million pounds out of Liberia, dyed black to conceal the currency.
They then demonstrated in a Seoul hotel room the removal of the black ink from a
genuine US$100 bill, using a "special chemical," promising to pay 10 percent of
their claimed total to the man if he invested $9,000 and an apartment to remove
the black ink from the paper money, which police said turned out to be heaps of
worthless papers.
The man reported the Liberians to police short before paying cash to them.
The Liberians told police they had planned to leave the country after receiving
money from their South Korean victims.
