GOVT TO PAY ATTENTION TO OUTLYING ISLANDS' DEVELOPMENT

Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara, Nov 11 (ANTRA) - The central government will give priority to the development of the country's outer islands which so far still face problems with infrastructures, clean water, economic backwardness, education and health, a minister said.

"The main problems being faced by isolated regions on outlaying islands included roads, electricity, fuel oils, clean water, education and health," Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said here on Wednesday.

He said that these problems would become a main focus of the development that would be carried out by the government in the coming several years.

Muhammad said that in the development of these regions, his ministry will soon discuss plans with Public Works Minister Joko Kirmanto and the minister of national education.

He said that on the development of roads, bridges and clean water, the public work minister had promised to discuss it with him on November 17, 2009.

"The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DKP) is willing to develop the people in the coastal areas of the country's outlaying islands. But we have no roads and clean water yet. We can only begin something in these regions if roads and clean water are already available," he said.

The minister said that the development programs on the outer islands would be carried out in three years. This meant, he said, that in the coming three years, access roads would have been made available in outer islands. So is the case with clean water, electricity and fuel oil supplies.

He said that in the three-year time, enough school and health facilities would have also been built so that they would change into isolated areas but with various facilities such as education and health facilities.

The minister said that only with that way could the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) be maintained.***3***
