PLN NEEDS RP32 TRILLION TO IMPROVE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

Jakarta, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) needs Rp32 trillion in funds to improve national electricity supply in 2010, its president director said.

"The funds will be used for various purposes, ranging from power plants, transmission to distribution networks to be able to meet our power needs," Fahmi Mochtar said following a meeting at the Office of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs here on Wednesday.

Fahmi said the Indonesian economy was projected to grow 4.0 percent this year. If it was to be geared up to expand 6 percent next year, power supply must grow 9 percent and therefore, Rp32 trillion in funds would be needed in 2010 alone.

The improvement of the electricity system in Jakarta and environs would require Rp4.6 trillion next year, he said.

"To make the electricity system in Jakarta more reliable we need an estimated Rp4.6 trillion in funds due to bottlenecks at the power houses and transmission networks," he said.

He said the funds would be obtained from the company's own funds and export credits.

"Admittedly, we have not been investing for a long time. And the current condition is the impact of this policy," he said.

Asked about compensation to customers for losses caused by frequent blackouts, he said there was a decree of the energy and mineral resources minister regulating the matter.

PLN translated the decree by imposing quality service standards (TMP), he said.

The compensation was given automatically to customers by reducing their electricity bills every month, he said.

"Actually, the compensations are already being given. Perhaps customers are not aware of it. I think the system needs to be evaluated so that customers know it," he said.

He said the compensations paid by PLN to customers reached 10 percent of its operating expenses.

In response to businessmen's threat to stop subscribing to PLN for lack of reliability, he said the electricity law gave a chance to other parties to speed up any effort to supply electrical power in Indonesia.

"I will be glad if investors are willing to help speed up any effort to supply electrical power in Indonesia," he said. ***2***
