AUSTRALIA SUPPORTS COMMUNITY FISHING PROJECTS IN MALUKU

Jakarta, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - An Australian Embassy official has left Jakarta for Maluku Province to observe two community projects carried out with funding support from Australia.

An Australian Embassy media release said on Tuesday Australia had worked with Maluku local community organizations Yayasan Tiara Pusaka and Yayasan Sauwa Sejahtera in supporting fish cultivation projects in two communities on Saparua and Seram islands.

The embassy`s third secretary, Gillian Kenny, would visit Negeri Haria on Saparua Island) and Sanahu village on Seram Island on November 10 and 11 to view first hand the benefits the projects are generating for the local communities.

"Australia`s support for these projects allows fishermen to fish closer to home and provides a more reliable livelihood in those communities," Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Bill Farmer said.

The Australian Embassy`s Direct Aid Program is a small-grants scheme which provides funds for community groups and non-government organizations engaged in development activities on a not-for-profit basis.

"The primary objective of the Direct Aid Program is to promote sustainable development initiatives that help communities boost their living standards," Farmer said.

Ms Kenny would also meet with local officials and community leaders in Ambon and visit Pattimura University.
