A'LIAN DELEGATION IN JAKARTA TO DISCUSS OIL SPILL
Jakarta, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - An Australian delegation visited Jakarta on Tuesday to discuss the oil spill from the wellhead platform at the Montara oil field, located in the Timor Sea.
A media release from the Australian embassy here said the leak was stopped on November 3 and there was no new oil coming from the platform.
Work to ensure the well was permanently capped was continuing, as well as Australia`s other comprehensive response efforts.
On November 3, drilling experts succeeded in "killing" the leaking well and stopped the main fire at the wellhead platform by pumping heavy mud into the leaking well.
Once the wellhead platform has cooled and engineers have determined that it was structurally sound and safe, drilling experts would board the platform to insert plugs into the leaking well, which would ensure the leak could not resume.
Successful capping of the well does not mean the Australian Government`s work in relation to the oil spill would cease. Clean-up operations and environmental assessments would continue.
Therefore, a team of Australian officials visited Indonesia on Tuesday for talks with Indonesian officials and to arrange further testing samples.
Australian officials have kept Indonesian officials fully informed of developments relating to the oil spill since it began.
"We are committed to discussing the Montara oil spill and any potential impacts with Indonesian authorities in an open and constructive manner," Australian Ambassador Bill Farmer said.
"This visit will enable technical experts to exchange information and discuss the next steps now that the leak has been stopped," Farmer added.
In particular, the delegation discussed clean up operations and environmental issues associated with the spill.
Australia will continue to act consistently with international law and its strong bilateral relationship in responding to the incident.
