Anoushka blackmail case: Delhi Police files chargesheet
New Delhi, Nov 11 (PTI) Delhi Police Wednesday accused a
Mumbai-based businessman of making extortion bids against
Anoushka Shankar, daughter of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi
Shankar, after obtaining her private photographs by hacking
her e-mail accounts.
In the chargesheet filed in the court of Chief
Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja, Special Cell of the
Delhi police sought prosecution of Junaid Khan for offences of
extortion under the Indian Penal Code and hacking the emails
account under the Information Technology Act.
"During inquiry, it was revealed the alleged person had
sent email to Anoushka firstly from Dubai in UAE and then from
Mumbai by using Airtel mobile number, which was a prepaid
connection and subscribed by Khan," the police alleged.
According to the police, Khan, arrested from commercial
hub Mumbai on September 14, had allegedly used Tata broadband
internet connection to send threatening emails to Anoushka
between May 11 and September 14 and demanded USD 1,22,000 in
lieu of her private photographs obtained by hacking her
emails.
The police, which recently got letters rogatory issued
from the court to the US authorities seeking assistance to
help in collection of evidence from the Google Inc in the
case, submitted they were awaiting a response from them.
The forensic reports on the seized mobile and laptop of
Khan were also awaited, the police said in the chargesheet put
up for consideration of the court on November 13.
The police also said they had obtained sanction from the
Indian government for trying Khan as the offence was
committed outside the country. PTI ATP
