RI, SINGAPORE AGREE TO MAKE COPENHAGEN MEETING A SUCCESS
Singapore, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Singapore agreed to work together to make the UN meeting on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the end of this year a success.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made the statement at a dinner held in his honor at the Singapore Palace by Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong here on Thursday.
"I am expecting support from Indonesia and Singapore to make the meeting in Copenhagen a success," Yudhoyono told around 50 guests including members of the Indonesian delegation.
As one of the initiators of the meeting on climate change, he emphasized the importance of the involvement of the international community in making the meeting, which would determine a new mechanism to replace the Kyoto protocol which would expire in 2010, a success.
Meanwhile after accompanying President Yudhoyono at the dinner, presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said the Indonesian and Singaporean governments hoped there would be effective cooperation to make the meeting in Copenhagen a success.
"Singapore is one of the active countries," he said referring to the presence of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loon in the UN meeting on climate change in Bali in December 2007.
Climate change has become an important issue following a strong demand for all countries to commit themselves to reducing carbon gas emmissions.
Until now the developed and developing countries still differ on carbon reduction figures.
President Yudhoyono was in Singapore for four days after paying a state visit to Malaysia.
While in Singapore he would meet with President SR Nathan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
From November 13 to 16 he would attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperating (APEC) summit and also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the meeting.***3***
