SCHOOL TEACHER BUILDING ANIMAL PART FOSSIL COLLECTION SINCE 1990

Bojonegoro, Nov 13 (ANTARA) - Harry Nugroho (45), an elementary school teacher in Bojonegoro district, East Java, has since 1990 been collecting bones believed to be parts of fossilized animals.

"I have collected hundreds of bone fragments. The latest addition to my collection is a fossilized bone of an ancient elephant," said Harry when interviewed at his work place at Panjungan Elementary Schools I and II here on Friday.

Among the items in Harry's collection are bone fragments from Karabau, Cervia, Stegodon Trigono Chepalus, Mastodon, Elephas, Babos and Bubalus. They are kept in special room in the school.

Some 30 wooden shelves line the museum-like room to carry hundreds of fossilized animal bone fragments including teeth, ivory, skulls.

"I often ask my students to help clean the collection," said Harry.
He said his latest find consisted of elephant bone parts altogether weighing 100 kilograms that were recovered in a basin excavation site in Wotan Ngare village, East Java, last Thursday (Nov 12).

"I am quite sure the fossil is still in its original formation," said the teacher adding that he had also found fragments of elephant ivory tusks 60 cm in length and 20 cm in diameter.
"All the fossils were found in an area in Bojonegoro district," he said adding that geologically Bojonegoro once had a primeval river believed to have sustained all living creatures that existed in the area at the time.

In his search for fossils, Harry only relied on a map and a book he got from a lecturer at the Mineral and Earth Science Faculty of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Dr Ir Johan Arif M.T.

Using the book entitled "Bojonegoro, Java, Geology on the Bojonegoro Quadrangle" by H Pringgo Prawiro AT Rahardjo and Sukido published in 1976, Harry had managed to find animal fossils in Bojonegoro.

He said he had developed an interest in collecting animal fossils because he did not want the things of priceless legacy to be taken by irresponsible people.

"Someday I will hand over my collection to the government. But I would like to give the fossils to ITB first to measure the age of the fossils," said Harry. ***
