SINGAPORE, Nov. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and
Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed Friday to increase their
cooperation in the international community that will include Seoul's efforts to
promote the interests of Singapore and other Asian nations at the G-20 economic
summit.

South Korea is set to chair the G-20 forum and host its fifth summit next year.
"The two leaders agreed to make joint efforts to promote the key agreements from
the G-20 summit held in Pittsburgh at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC) summit," Seoul's presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae, said in a press
release.
The South Korean president arrived here earlier Friday on a three-day visit for
the APEC summit that will also be attended by the leaders of 19 other economies
in the region, including U.S. President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister
Yukio Hatoyama.
Lee said the APEC summit, to begin Saturday, is especially important as the world
economy is now entering a recovery phase.
"I hope the upcoming meeting will be an opportunity for us to fight trade
protectionism and bolster international cooperation," the South Korean leader was
quoted as telling Loong.
The Singaporean prime minister said he hopes next year's G-20 summit, to be held
in Seoul in November, will continue APEC's efforts to fight the global recession,
according to Cheong Wa Dae spokeswoman Kim Eun-hye.
Loong also expressed support for Seoul's proposal for a grand bargain with North
Korea on the complete denuclearization of the communist North in a single step,
calling it a good solution for the nuclear issue, Kim told reporters.
"In addition, President Lee said his country will strengthen its cooperation with
Singapore and other non-G20 countries while preparing for next year's summit,"
Cheong Wa Dae said in its press release.
Lee and the Singaporean leader also agreed to hold frequent talks in the future
to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues, Cheong Wa Dae said.
