RUSSIA-INDIA 2 LST
According to diplomatic sources Sobyanin's India tour is
a part of the preparations for the upcoming Indo-Russian
summit here early next month, when Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh is scheduled to visit Moscow for talks with President
Dmitry Medvedev and Premier Vladimir Putin.
Both Moscow and New Delhi are keen to 'reset' their
economic relations, which are the pale shadow of Indo-Soviet
trade based on the barter of Iraqi oil, received by Moscow for
arms supplies to Saddam Hussein.
With China and the West seeking access to Russia's
immense mineral and natural resources, Moscow wants Indians to
be proactive in capacity-building. Russia wants India to
invest in various economic sectors where it is traditionally
strong and which could fulfil India's import requirements.
President Dmitry Medvedev, in his address to nation
yesterday, announced the agenda for innovative modernisation
of Russia.
Sobyanin identified telecom and space navigation system
GLONASS, joint development and application of super computers,
aerospace technologies as areas where India and Russia could
closely cooperate.
Pharmaceuticals and nuclear energy were also the sectors
that could facilitate Indo-Russian economic partnership. PTI
