MANDELA`S PRESENCE IN AMBON STILL UNCONFIRMED

Ambon, Maluku, Indonesia, Nov 14 (ANTARA) - The expected visit of former South African president Nelson Mandela to Ambon for a World Peace Day event on November 25, 2009 is still unconfirmed, the event's chief organizer said.

World Peace Committee President Djuyoto Suntani when contacted by phone in Jakarta on Saturday said that the Nobel Laureate had been invited to the function in Ambon where President Susilo Bambang Yudyoyono would strike a World Peace Gong.

He said initially, the celebration was scheduled to be held on November 10, 2009, but because it would coincide with National Heroes' Day, it was postponed two times to November 15 and November 25, 2009.

Suntani said the committee was still trying to get confirmation from the South African figure on his presence at the event.

"The presence of the 91-year old South African leader who was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace in 1993 possibly depends on his state of health, " he said.

He said that another world renown figure invited to the event is the founder of Grameen Bank, Mohammad Yunus of Bangladesh who was also awarded the Nobel prize in 2006.

"We really hope the two world figures who care for humanity can come to Ambon which was torn by communal conflict for some time since 1999," he said.***
