POLICE FOIL ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE 61 ME IMMIGRANTS TO A`LIA
Kupang, Indonesia, Nov 14 (ANTARA) - Police in East Nusa Tenggara have foiled an attempt to smuggle 61 illegal immigrants from the Middle East to Australia by an Indonesian citizen via the Indonesian island of Rote.
"I was to take them to Australia for Rp2.5 million per person," Jimmi, the would-be people smuggler who normally works as a fisherman in Maumere on Flores Island, told police on Saturday.
The police seized the illegal immigrants numbering on Thursday and the immigrants are now being held at the local marine police headquarters.
Earlier, the provincial police had prevented 12 illegal immigrants also from the Middle East from being transported to Australia. The group was now being held at the Kupang immigration detention house.
Jimmi said, the boat carrying him and the 61 immigrants was already in Nusa Rote waters on its way to Australia when it was intercepted by an Indonesian marine police patrol boat.
"The immigrants' offer to pay Rp2.5 million per person was too good to pass up," he said.
Two of the illegal immigrants had been shot because they tried to escape. They were now being treated at the Bhayangkara hospital in Kupang. The two sustained serious injury on their right hands and had to be treated intensively.
Police would conduct patrols again on Sunday to anticipate more attempts to smuggle illegal immigrants to Australia.
Human smuggling from East Nusatenggara to Austalia happens frequently because control is weak, especially on the border between Indonesia and Australia.***
