S. Korea to inject 10.2 trln won in tourism hub on tidal flat
By Lee Joon-seung
SEOUL, Nov. 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea plans to spend 10.2 trillion won (US$8.8
billion) by 2020 on developing a world-class tourism industry hub on a vast
reclaimed tidal flat south of the capital, the government said Sunday.
Approved by the free economic zone (FEZ) committee made up of representatives
from the government and the private sector, the plan calls for building a city
tailored to cultural, recreational and tourism businesses in the Saemangeum
region located 280km south of Seoul, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said.
It said the new city will cover 24.4 square kilometers of land, hold two
international schools, as well as theaters, museums and a 72-hole golf course. It
will also have modern healthcare facilities and a residential area deemed vital
for attracting foreign investors.
Once built, the new city could become home to 120,00 residents.
"In effect, the city will become a center for tourism and recreational business
that want to target the Northeast Asian markets," an official said.
Seoul will spend 46 billion won next year to lay the foundation for the new city.
The Saemangeum project began in 1991 with state expenditure to date totaling over
2.4 trillion won. The region covers 401 square kilometers with plans underway to
transform the tidal flats into agricultural, industrial and tourism centers.
The FEZ committee, meanwhile, said that it has given final approval to set up a
local campus of the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU).
The university is to start accepting students in March 2010 for its campus being
built at the Busan-Jinhae FEZ on the southeastern tip of the country.
The school will offer courses in the engineering, biotech and machinery
processing fields.
FAU ranked seventh among Germany's 300 universities and is one of the largest
schools in the Bayern region. It is currently engaged in joint research and
development with companies like Siemens AG and Bayer Group.
