SPORT SL LD LUNCH 2
India, playing their first Test match in more than six
months, were rocked on the back foot by Welegedara who made
his debut against England at Galle two years ago.
Gambhir was his first victim when he dragged a defensive
shot on to his stumps off the inside edge in the third over of
the day.
Next to go was Sehwag, who struck three fours in 11 balls
before being trapped leg before by another incoming ball from
Welegedera. Umpire Tony Hill took some time before raising his
finger to send back the Delhi marauder to the dressing room.
Tendulkar, who was felicitated before the start of the
game by the Gujarat Government and Gujarat Cricket
Association, was bowled through the gate by a fine inswinger
from Welegedera.
The batting maestro, playing his 160th Test, lasted just
three balls, striking a superb cover drive off the first ball
he faced.
India slid deeper into the mire when Prasad, who was a
bit expensive at the other end, castled Laxman off the inside
edge as he played well away from the body to leave the home
team gasping at 32 for four in the eighth over.
It was left to Dravid, who has come into the tie after
striking three half centuries in four innings in the Ranji
Trophy, to play his all-too-familiar role and stem the rot
with Yuvraj. More PTI
