OANA MEMBERS URGED TO END WESTERN MEDIA`S DOMINATION

Tehran, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - Members of the Organization of Asia- Pacific News Agencies (OANA) have been urged to put an end to the domination of western media which tend to be biased and not to serve the interest of Asia Pacific countries.
Dr Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf in his capicity as OANA President made the appeal on the occasion of the 31st OANA Executive Board Meeting in Tehran, the capital of Iran, on Monday.

The meeting was attended by delegates from countries in the board of OANA which groups 40 news agencies in 33 countries in the Asia Pacific region.

According to Mukhlis Yusuf, OANA was set up in Bangkok in the 1960s to balance the flow of the world information mostly dominated by western news agencies.

However, until now efforts to create a balance in international news dissemination were still unsuccessful so it was time for OANA members to find a wayout.

OANA, he further said, had a mission in news dissemination for media or news agencies in charge of carrying news stories on happenings in the Asia Paficic region.

"For example, a news story on Indonesia is more appropriate if the report is directly handled by Antara, Malaysia by Bernama or Iran by IRNA or Mehr News Agency which is now host for the meeting," he said.
If an event happening in Iran is reported by a foreign news agency or western media, it could possibly be biased and not be accurate, he further stressed. For example, a demonstration in Iran was reported to be worse and in a tense condition by western media.

"In fact, what we have witnessed the situation in Teheran is stable. If we read the reports from western media, it gives us a picture that the condition of security in that country is tense," he said.

Ending the domination of western media, according Mukhlis Yusuf, could be achieved by improving the credibility and accuracy of the news reports of OANA members. "Only in this way, can the new world information order be in a position of balance," he said. ***
