IRANIAN LABOR NEWS AGENCY APPLIES FOR OANA MEMBERSHIP

Jakarta, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - The Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) recently applied for membership in the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) , a source said.

According to information received here on Monday, OANA's Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia, on October 28, 2009, received a letter from ILNA Executive Director Abotorab Fazel requesting his organization's admission as an OANA member.

ILNA's request would be discussed further at OANA's 32nd Executive Board Meeting (EBM) and its 14th General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey, in September 2010.

ILNA was established in Tehran, Iran, on March 2002 with the task of providing accurate and up-to-the-minute information to public about Iran and the world.

ILNA covers a wide variety of news subjects such as political, labor, economy, cultural, social, sports and military.

As to OANA itself, the organization was formed in December 1961 on the initiative of UNESCO to secure direct and free exchange of news between the news agencies of a region inhabited by more than one half of the world''s population.
Asia-Pacific countries account for 56 percent of the world gross product, some 50 percent of its trade turnover, over 60 percent of its maritime and nearly 25 percent of air transport volumes.

The world''s largest financial reserves and science-intensive technologies are concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region. At present OANA brings together 41 news agencies from 33 countries.

OANA members news account for two-thirds of the information circulated throughout the world.

Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf, president of Indonesia's ANTARA news agency, is the current chairman of OANA.***
