OANA RECORDS INCREASED GLOBAL READERSHIP

Jakarta, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - The Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) has succeeded in boosting its news service to customers during 2009 or the second year of ANTARA News Agency's term as the organization's president.

According to latest data received here on Monday, the OANA website (http://www.oananews.org) recorded a substantial increase in global readership in 2009. Before 2009, the average number of hits of the OANA website was 200.000, but now the figure had increased by 100 percent to 400,000 hits per month.

A surprising thing was that most of the hits were made by people in countries outside the Asia-Pacific region such as United States (US) with 36 percent and Japan with eight percent.

The encouraging progress was in accordance with OANA's vision to voice messages from the Asia-Pacific region to a wider international audience.

In order to strengthen cooperation with other regional and international media institutions, OANA had conducted several activities during 2009 such as visits by Secretary General OANA Saiful Hadi to Kyodo News Agency after attending a Confederation of Asian Journalists meeting with Nihon Shinbum Kyokai (NSK) in Tokyo last September 2, 2009.

President of OANA Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf and Head of OANA Secretariat Akhmad Kusaeni also attended a World Media Summit organized by Xinhua News Agency in Beijing last October 8-10, 2009. Afterwards, the two were heading to South Korea for three days visit (October 11-13, 2009) to meet officials from Yonhap News Agency.

ANTARA News Agency as the current president of OANA also conducted exchange programs between its photographers and Azerbaijan's. ANTARA facilitated photographer and editor of Azerbaijan's media Azertac, Taleh Guliyev, on a week visit to Indonesia starting March 3-9, 2009 where he took pictures and filed stories about Indonesia through Azerbaijan perspectives.

On the other hand, ANTARA sent Audy Mirza Alwi, a senior photographer, to Baku, Azerbaijan, on August 12-18, 2009, with the same mission as Guliyev. The activity was expected to give its participants a glimpse of both countries' potentials.

Having 41 news agencies across 33 countries in Asia-Pacific region as members, OANA will have its 14th General Assembly and 32nd Executive Board Meeting (EBM) in Istanbul, Turkey, on September 2010.
