VP: RI ON FOREFRONT OF BATTLE AGAINST COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Surabaya, E Java, Indonesia, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - Vice President Boediono said on Monday Indonesia as a tropical country was on the forefront of the battle against communicable diseases.
"As a tropical country, Indonesia is very vulnerable to the spread of new viruses. This means that we are on the forefront of the battle against communicable diseases," he said at the launch of a H5N1 (bird flu) seed virus laboratory at Airlangga University (Unair) here.
Also present on the occasion were Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh, East Java Governor Soekarwo and Vice Governor Syaifullah Yusuf.
As the country was highly susceptible to communicable diseases it must be able to master technology, he said.
"We need to increase and develop the capacity of laboratories like this one," he said.
"I am proud that Unair has been able to make a breakthrough. This is one of our steps to become self-reliant," he said.
The vice president said the Indonesian nation must not continue to rely on other countries.
He said the laboratory must be maintained in accordance with standard rules. "There must be a good protocol. Don't fail to manage this technology. Don't let the virus escape. It would be very dangerous."
Earlier, Unair Rector Fasich said since bird flu virus for the first time affected Indonesia in June 2005, the university had been conducting a series of studies.
Hopefully, the results of the studies would enable the country to raise its bird flu vaccine production to 20 million doses per year, he said.
"Currently, bird flu vaccine production stands at 300 thousand doses per year, well below national need," he said. ***
