MINISTER: RI OPEN TO EMERGING IDEAS IN ASIA
Jakarta, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - Foreign minister Marty Natalegawa said Indonesia is open to various ideas emerging in Asia including that of Japan that gives in itself an added value to the region.
"We are open towards the idea and this proves that Asia is dynamic," he said to reporters after delivering a speech at the opening of the 7th Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) conference here on Monday.
He said Indonesia along with other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) were just striving to realize an Asean community in line with the agreements that have been reached.
He said Asean also had cooperation forums for its partners from various regions such as Asia, America and Europe such as the Asean+3 and the Asean Regional Forum (ARF).
International relations expert from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and the Habibie Center, Prof Dr Dewi Fortuna Anwar, who also attended the conference meanwhile said that the Indonesian position within the regional architecure was clear.
"What is important for Indonesia is consolidating Asean into an Asean Community and assuring that Asean will always be the main engine behind every bigger regional frameworks," she said.
Dewi said she fully supported the minister's statement that approach towards regional architecture must be done in stages through building blocks with Asean as its center.
In the 15th Asean high-level meeting in Hua Hin, Thailand, recently, the idea to create an East Asian community was again raised by Japanese prime minister Yukio Hatoyama.
The idea that had emerged since the 11th Asean summit in 2005 withdrew questions even including a rejection from the Asean region.
Efforts to form various kinds of regional cooperation forums were signs of a continued regionalism when economic dimension came up. However the the East Asia idea cannot ignore the regional geostrategic and geopolitical interests.
The CSCAP meeting from November 16 to 18 would be attended by various experts as speakers. ***
