(LEAD) Hyundai, Kia show brisk Oct. sales in Europe
(ATTN: FIXES figures in para 4)
SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Yonhap) -- European sales of Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors
Corp., South Korea's largest automakers, jumped last month on strong marketing of
their small-and mid-sized cars and strengthened networks, a European industry
body said Tuesday.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), Hyundai's
auto sales gained 31.9 percent from a year ago to 26,194 cars in the European
market in October.
Sales for Kia stood at 22,971 units last month, up 25.4 percent from a year
earlier.
During the January-October period, the companies' combined sales reached 497,854
units, a 13.8 percent climb since last year. Their share of the European
automobile market also rose to 4.1 percent from 3.5 percent the year before.
The association attributed the rise to the companies' line-up of small and
medium-sized cars and their expansion of sales networks in the region. The South
Korean automakers took advantage of policies in many European countries that
provide subsidies to buyers who scrap their old cars and purchase newer vehicles
with lower carbon emissions.
The brisk sales by Hyundai and Kia came as auto sales in Europe have fallen 5
percent so far this year.
Hyundai, along with its affiliate Kia, is the world's sixth-largest carmaker.
