BEI INDEX CLOSES HIGHER ON COMMODITY GAINS

Jakarta, Nov. 17 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) closed higher here late Monday morning as investors purchased commodity shares.

The BEI index gained 24.78 points or 0.40 percent to 2,409.34 points, and the LQ 45 index added 2.410 points to 490.230 points.

The domestic bourse was active as investors were interested in most of commodity shares, especially coal, according to Krishna Dwi Setiawan, a research analyst of PT Valbury Asia Securities.

"Investors were encouraged to buy shares by the low interest rate globally as emphasized by the commitment of APEC leaders," he said.

Market sentiment remained positive thanks to the low interest rate climate and the improvement in the economic data on the automotive sector in the US, he said.

Among regional bourses, the Hang Seng index weakened 101.15 points to 22.842 points, Nikkei-225 index dropped 36.69 points to the level of 9,754, Straits Times index declined 3.37 points to 2,780 points.

The frequency of transactions in the first trading session was recorded at 51,390 times with a total volume of 2.921 billion worth Rp2.249 trillion. Some 70 shares advanced, 70 lost and 75 others remained static .

At the opening of the morning session, the BEI index went up 0.19 percent or 4.616 points to 2,473.291 points, and the LQ-45 index surged 1.125 points or 0.23 percent to 488.945 points.
