SOUTH SUMATRA TO HOLD SECOND DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Palembang, Nov 17 (ANTARA) - The South Sumatra provincial government is to organize the Second Musi Festival including a dragon boat race on the Musi river, Palembang, on December 5-6, 2009.

Eva Rulianingtyas, secretary general of the Indonesian Rowing Association (PODSI) as the event`s organizing committee, said here Tuesday, the second Musi Festival would be participated in by national and international rowing clubs.

"In this event, the participants will vie for prizes totaling Rp150 million," she said.

Foreign rowing clubs to participate in the competition would come from the Philippines, China and Malaysia.

"The event`s purpose is to develop and preserve the traditional rowing sport. Besides, it will be an important event for South Sumatra as it is an international one," said the former rowing athlete.

Apart from holding a dragon festival, South Sumatra would also hold the second National Dragon Boat Competition.

The national rowing competition would be held on Lake Ogan Permata Indah (OPI) n Jakabaring, Palembang, on December 3-4, 2009 and offer eight golden medals to the winners.

"There will be two main categories in the national event, namely 500 meters and 250 meters dragon boat. Each category is divided into two classes, men`s and women`s, with each team consisting of 12 to 22 rowers," Eva said.
