ANI YUDHOYONO : BATIK BRINGS CLOSER RI-US CULTURAL BONDS
Jakarta, Nov 17 (ANTARA) - First Lady Ani Yudhoyono said that Indonesia`s batik as one of the world`s cultural heritage can bridge the cultural understanding between Indonesia and the United States through Ann Dunham`s batik collection.
This was said by Ani Yudhoyono at the opening of an exhibition of a batik collection by Ann Dunham, mother of U.S. President Barrack Obama in Grand Indonesia in Jakarta Tuesday.
"Besides being a cultural heritage, batik also serves as a bridge for a cultural bond between the two countries," she said.
She added that the beauty of Indonesia`s batik should be shown and increasingly introduced to the world.
"I hope the exhibition confirms the existence of batik, we
presents its beauty to the world, I hope this exhibition can bring the two nations even closer," she explained.
The first lady`s batik collection along with small memories also requested to be exhibited in the event at Grand Indonesia`s square.
"I want to convey a personal note containing a collection of my batiks and short story, hopefully useful," said Ani.
Ani Yudhoyono said that batik has brightened the life of the Indonesian people, starting from birth to death. According to her, batik is worn during birth to hold the baby, graduation days, and s worn with Kebaya (Indonesian traditional dress) on wedding parties, even as coffin for a departed person.
Therefore the first lady asked that a devotion for and development of batik cloth must be carried out by generations.
Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik, Minister of Trade Mari Elka Pangestu and a number of other high-ranking officials, as well as batik lovers also attended the exhibition.
