RI, BRITAIN TO COOPERATE IN CARBON EMISSION REDUCTION

Jakarta, Nov 18 (ANTARA) - The governments of Indonesia and Britain have agreed to cooperate in a number of schemes to reduce the volumes of carbon emission.

Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Darwin Zahedy Saleh after a meeting with his British counterpart Joan Ruddock said here on Wednesday that Indonesia ahead would use more new and renewable energies such as geothermal, hydropower and biofuels (BBN).

"We agree to create cleaner world through the development of new and renewable energies," he said.

But in the short term, Indonesia will still use energy which came from coal as an alternative to fuel oils (BBM), he said.

But the utilization of coals should be equipped with environment-friendly equipment such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) devices.

In the short term, he said, both sides agreed to use new and renewable energies such as geothermal and BBN.

The utilization of BBN should not harm the people's need for the commodity as food stuff, he said.
