GOVT TO HELP REPATRIATE THOUSANDS OF PAPUANS FROM PNG

Jayapura, Nov 19 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government, through the Home Affairs Department, is ready to help repatriate thousands of Papuans who have been living in neighboring Papua New Guinea (PNG) for years but now want to return home.

"The government will help in transporting them back to their home towns or villages in Papua," Sutrisno, director general of general administration affairs at the Home Affairs Ministry, said here on Thursday after meeting with 65 Papuans who had just returned from PNG. .

The 65 Papuans, including tens of children, arrived at Sentani Airport at 11.40 East Indonesia Time (WIB) from a western province of PNG by a Hercules plane belonging to the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI).

Sutrisno said the 65 Papuans' repatriation had involved not only the Home Affairs Department but also the Foreign Affairs Department, the TNI, the Air Force, the Directorate General of Immigration, the Quarantine Unit and the Social Department.

According to Sutrisno, on November 22, 250 more Papuans would arrive in Papua from PNG. The repatriated Papuans would be temporarily accommodated in Jayapura before being picked up by officials from the administrations of their respective home region.

Earlier, Dody Budiatman of the Coordinating Ministry of People's Welfare, had said some 708 Papuans residing in PNG were ready to be repatriated.

"However, the repatriation process may take years since it requires all sorts of arrangements, including securing written permission from the PNG government, provision of air transportation, and preparations to receive them in Indonesia itself," he said. ***1***
