TNI TO USE HOME-MADE WEAPONS
Jakarta, Nov 19 (ANTARA) - National Defense Forces (TNI) chief Gen Djoko Santoso said the TNI would use weapons and other military equipment produced by the domestic defense industry.
After dispatching 1,125 TNI personnel to Lebanon here on Thursday, Djoko said the TNI was already using some of the products of the domestic defense industry such as SS-1 and SS-2 assault rifles, armored vehicles, and patrol boats.
"The TNI has for a long time been using home-made products in accordance with its needs," the TNI chief said.
Asked about the planned revitalization of the domestic defense industry, Djoko said the TNI along with the Defense Ministry and other related institutions were formulating and re-synchronizing its armament and other material needs.
"We have held an inter-departmental meeting to formulate and re-synchronize the weapons that we need in line with the domestic defense industry revitalization policy," he said.
The TNI chief also said earlier the TNI was ready procure weapons and other military hardware from the domestic defense industry on a large scale and a long-term basis.
"There is no problem, as long as the domestic defense industry products can meet TNI's needs and requirements, the dimensions of the threats we face, and others. After all, the TNI is already using home-made weapons," Djoko said.
Revitalization of the domestic defense industry is one of the priorities of the first 100-day program of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's government.
Djoko said the revitalization of the domestic defense industry would be strengthened based on a presidential decree which was now being formulated.
