AXIS DONATES RP200 MILLION TO W SUMATRA QUAKE VICTIMS

Surabaya, E Java, Nov 19 (ANTARA) - Cellular phone operator Axis has donated Rp200 million to help post-quake rehabilitation efforts in West Sumatra province.

The funds were raised from Axis subscribers and employees, the company`s human resources and communications director, Wahyudin Adikusumah, said in a press statement issued here on Thursday.

"The aid intended to finance the first phase of post-quake rehabilitation efforts was channeled through the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and a non-governmental organization," he said.

A great portion of the funds was obtained from the sales of Axis tickets to the Jakarta International Java Soulnation Festival held some time ago, he said.

"We will also participate in a number of projects to renovate damaged educational and health facilities in Padang," he said.

He said Axis also had provided people living in affected areas in West Sumatra with free and unlimited phone call and short message services, and donated telecommunication equipment to the local authorities as part of corporate social responsibility.

In addition, the company`s regional team in Sumatra also had extended humanitarian aid to quake victims at Padang Limau hemlet in Padang Pariaman district, he said.

Axis which is mainly controlled by Saudi Telecom Company (STC) and Maxis Communications of Malaysia has been serving West Sumatra since April 2008. The company now has about 100 base transciever stations (BTS) in the province.

An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale rocked the province on September 30, 2009, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring thousands of others. ***3***
