FLOOD INUNDATES MAJALAYA VILLAGE IN BANDUNG

Soreang, Nov. 22 (ANTARA) - Majalaya village, a main textile producer in Bandung District, West Java, was inundated on Sunday as Citarum River overflowed.

A number of houses were submerged by floodwaters reaching a height of between 65 cm to 75 cm, Riki Waskito, Garda Caah Rescue Communications and Information coordinator, said on Sunday.

The floodwaters might continue to raise and inundate rice fields and textile factories at Majalaya, he said.

Heavy rains triggered the floods, he said. A number of textile factories were temporarily closed as most of their employees' houses were also flooded.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, hundreds of houses and hectares of rice fields were inundated as the Ciliman, Cilemer, and Cisanggoma rivers in Pendeglang District, Banten, overflowed.

The floods had submerged eight villages in 70 cm to 100 cm of floodwater, Patia Sub District Head Maman said on Saturday.

The subdistrict is located between the Ciliman and Cilemer rivers and prone to floods, he said.

At least 720 houses and hectares of rice fields were inundated, he said.

Pandeglang district authorities had provided emergency tents, 50 tons of rice, medical supplies, and rubber boats for the flood victims.

Some 250 rescue workers were mobilized to help evacuate the flood victims, according to Maman.

Floods triggered by incessant heavy rains over the past two days, also inundated a number of villages in Julok subdistrict, East Aceh, on Saturday.

Tens of houses had been engulfed by the floodwaters since the wee hours of Saturday, according to Tgk Safri Akbari, a local resident of Julok subdistrict.

A number of people had evacuated to AL Kubra Mosque, Kuta Binje town, avoiding the floodwaters.

The flood also caused the main Banda Aceh-Medan road to lie under 30 centimeters of water which also caused traffic jams.

Among the villages affected by the floods were Medeung Ara, Julok, Blang Mideuen and Blang Jambe.

Hectares of rice fields were also inundated in East Aceh District which has a population of 4.6 million, and experiences annual flooding.
