UNHCR official calls for cooperation to assist displaced, refugee people in Yemen
SANA'A, Nov. 22 (Saba) - Assistant UN High Commissioner for Refugees Janet Lim
confirmed
Sunday that the commissioner will continue to work together with the Yemeni
government to improve the displaced people and refugees conditions in Yemen.
"We understand the Yemeni government's concern on the security situation," Lim
said, praising Yemeni efforts exerted to provide aid and receive refugees.
At the end of her visit to Yemen, Lim added that she had briefed the humanitarian
member groups in Sana'a with the outcomes of the visit .
She also called for more cooperation between non-government and international
organizations to assist Yemeni displaced people .
UNHCR's official visited the southern provinces of Hajjah and Amran as well as
Kharaz Camp.
UNHCR estimates that 175,000 people have been affected by the conflict in Yemen
since the beginning of the war in Saada province, north Yemen. About 156,000 Somali
and Ethiopian
refugees have been registered .
Around 150 new refugees arrive daily at al-Mazrak Camp in Hajjah province in recent
days, compared with the 20 to 30 arriving daily in previous weeks, according to
UNHCR.
UNHCR warned that the camp has now exceeded its capacity with nearly 10,000
internally displaced persons living there.
The fighting has now spilled into Saudi Arabia, reportedly causing 240 villages to
be evacuated and more than 50 schools to be closed.
