Police officer tells court he exchanged fire with Kasab

Mumbai, Nov 23 (PTI) A senior police inspector Monday
told a special court hearing the 26/11 terror attack case that
he was part of a team which exchanged fire with two terrorists
near St. Xavier's College after the duo emerged from Cama
Hospital.
His deposition is considered significant because
earlier, while tendering evidence, he had not disclosed that
the team had engaged in a battle with terrorists (later
identified as Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismael).
Deposing before Judge M L Tahaliyani, Inspector
Yashwant Thorawade said he had not disclosed this incident
earlier in the court because his evidence was related to Cama
Hospital firing only and also because no questions were
specifically put to him about the battle with terrorists.
Thorawade was recalled as witness by the court to
examine him on firing between police and terrorists after
constable Suresh Kadam disclosed in his evidence that the
inspector was part of the team which fought the attackers.
The witness said, "We saw two gunmen stepping out of
Cama Hospital. Around the same time, a constable arrived on a
bike with an officer on the pillion. The officer got down and
the gunmen fired at him. We suspected they were terrorists."
"We too fired at the gunmen when they opened fire at
us. After firing one round, the revolver of Kadam got jammed
and he could not fire further. By then I had fired six rounds
and there were no bullets left in my revolver," he said,
adding no one was injured. (more) PTI
