SOME 400 VILLAGES IN EAST JAVA PRONE TO LANDSLIDES
Surabaya, Indonesia, Nov 24 (ANTARA) - At least 400 villages in East Java are prone to landslides during the rainy season, regional disaster management coordination unit (BPPD) spokesman Mudjiono said here on Tuesday.
He said most of the villages which are prone to landslides are located on mountain slopes with forest degradation.
The villages which are prone to landslides during the rainy season are located in 20 districts and municipalities from Tulungagung to Banyuwangi.
"We have mapped those villages and made coordination with the local administration to stay alert and conduct evacuation efforts whenever landslides happen," Mudjiono said.
He said BPPD had also sent a rescue team to Tulungagung district which was hit by a landslide a few days ago.
"The team brings along rubber boats to anticipate flash floods during the rainy season," Mujiono said, adding that he also reminded the locals living in river basins of flash floods and landslides.
The 20 flash flood-prone districts and municipalities included the districts of Malang with five rivers in 22 villages, Blitar with 11 rivers in 14 villages, Tulungagung with eight rivers in 32 villages, Ponorogo with three rivers in five villages, Madiun with two rivers in four villages, Nganjuk with 11 rivers in 16 villages, Kediri with 19 sungai in 31 villages, Jombang with 7 rivers in 9 villages, Bojonegoro with 11 rivers in 15 villages, and Tuban with two rivers in 23 villages, Lamongan with 15 rivers in 43 villages, Gresik with two rivers in 81 villages, Mojokerto with two rivers in 37 villages, Pasuruan with six rivers in 43 villages, Lumajang with three rivers in five villages, Jember with four rivers in five villages, Situbondo with 12 rivers in 17 villages, Bondowoso with two rivers in three villages, and Banyuwangi with two rivers in two villages.***
