BEI INDEX OPENS HIGHER ON WALL STREET GAINS
Jakarta, Nov. 24 - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) opened slightly higher here on Tuesday morning on Wall Street gains.
The BEI index went up 0.999 points or 0.04 percent to 2,482.625 points and the LQ-45 index surged 0.306 points or 0.06 percent to 440.112,209 points.
Market activities were rather sluggish although investors purchased some shares, Alfiansyah, a stock broker of PT Sinarmas Securities, said.
Investors were cautious and not too enthusiastic in entering the domestic stock market following President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech last Monday evening on the cases of Bibit-Chandra, the suspended leaders of KPK (Corruption Eradication Commission).
The market was not too active because investors had not yet responded to the President's speech, he said.
Among top gainers were Astra Agro Lestari shares that rose Rp500 to Rp23,250, Indo Tambang Mega shares that gained Rp200 to Rp21,350, Astra Internasional shares that added Rp100 to Rp33,250, United Tractor shares that advanced Rp50 to Rp15,100, BCA shares that increased Rp50 to Rp4,700 and Telkom shares that went up Rp50 to Rp9,000 per share.
Meanwhile, the rupiah sharply weakened against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Tuesday morning, on profit taking moves.
The Indonesian currency traded Rp9,495-Rp9,505 per US dollar, down 50 points from Rp9,445-Rp9,455 per US dollar.
Investors took profit by selling the local currency which had earlier strengthen significantly, according to Rully Nova, a foreign currency analyst of PT Bank Himpunan Saudara Tbk.***
