S. Korea's two airlines may rise fuel surcharges in January
By Nam Kwang-sik
SEOUL, Nov. 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's two major airlines are likely to
increase fuel surcharges for international routes in January to reflect a rise in
jet fuel prices, the companies said Thursday.
Korean Air Lines Co., the larger of the two, and its rival Asiana Airlines Inc.,
may raise their fuel surcharges for one-way long-haul flights to Europe and the
United States to US$41 from $32, they said.
The government-set surcharge system allows the carriers to adjust surcharges for
international routes monthly in tandem with the average price of fuel oil in the
previous two months.
The average price of jet fuel hovered at about $1.95 a gallon on the Singaporean
spot market from October 1 to November 25, the local airlines said.
The airlines can impose fuel surcharges on their international flights if the
average price of jet fuel is above $1.5 a gallon.
