WFP official praises Japan's target on greenhouse gas emissions+
TOKYO, Nov. 26 Kyodo -
A visiting senior World Food Program official on Thursday praised Japanese
Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25
percent, while saying Japan and the U.N. organization are ''ideal partners'' in
tackling world hunger.
The decision by Japan to announce such an ambitious figure should be strongly
welcomed because it is ''a courageous and outgoing initiative,'' WFP Deputy
Executive Director Staffan de Mistura said during an interview with Kyodo News.
''We can only say the world and all of us should be gratified.''
The plan revealed by the Hatoyama government, which was inaugurated in
mid-September, calls for Japan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent
from 1990 level by 2020.
Saying Japan has been a ''strong contributor'' to the WFP's work, de Mistura
added he sensed through meetings with government officials during his five-day
visit from Monday that the Hatoyama government is ''very serious about wanting
to produce results.''
''I have a feeling that this is going to be a very effective difference,'' he
said, referring to Tokyo's policies on climate change, human security and
commitment to countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan.
